Recently, hip hop artist, Aquanes, released his first monetized single on several listening platforms including Spotify and Apple music. Reinventing himself as an artist, formerly known as Young Flo, Aquanes is here with a new name and new sound. He has been working on music since the age of 7 and releasing music on platforms like Youtube and Soundcloud since 2013. Preceding to his August album, Aquanes released this first official single, “Heartbreakers,” on July 12th.
Aquanes’s single, “Heartbreakers,” frankly surprised me. As someone who was not a super huge fan of him as Young Flo, I honestly did not expect much out of his new single but upon listening, I did enjoy it. “Heartbreakers” resonates this feeling of sadness while offering a beat I can bop my head to. The song starts with a mysterious and laid back beat, which gives the song a dark, sad vibe. Aquanes’s voice adds to this dark vibe of the song with a deeper, cleaner sound than he has had in the past. He goes on with the chorus which repeats, “the more I give my heart the more you take” which fits perfectly with the mood of the song, because he’s sharing his experience with heartbreak. While the course is perfectly on par with the mood throughout the song, it felt just a bit too repetitive.
Aside from just his lack of luck with love, Aquanes goes on to share how his life has been rough: working two jobs, feeling like a lost soul, trying to make a better life for himself.. For an upcoming artist, Aquanes’s verses are witty and they flow well. My personal favorite: “I need more than just a cutie with a booty...”
The outro of the song is about a minute which for me is a little too long, I would’ve liked to hear another verse from Aquanes to end the song. Overall, I really enjoyed the song and will continue to listen to it. In comparison to some of the things that Aquanes did as Young Flo, this is a large step up, and I think he is going places. Looking forward to his album release in August.
